How to Capture Learners' Attention

Capturing Attention: Discover the Keys to Designing Impactful Online Training Courses.

One Perspective and Five Tips

Let's start with the perspective. As an e-learning solutions designer, I constantly face the challenge of capturing learners' attention. Quite often, it is mentioned that learners' attention spans tend to decrease, particularly among millennials, and that consequently, the duration of training sessions must be reduced; people sometimes talk about segments as short as five minutes.

However, this perspective on learners' attention spans hides another, possibly predominant factor: the increasing complexity of the work environment and tools.

For many employees, the workplace is becoming increasingly rich in information and communication.

Indeed, the work environment for many employees is becoming increasingly rich in terms of information and communication. Just think of collaborative software such as Microsoft Teams, social networks, and office and IT environments (folders, emails, and electronic calendars). Furthermore, the number of devices has grown from one—namely the PC—to three: PC, tablet, and mobile phone. What's more, all these devices tend to stack up. To add to the complexity, tasks, processes, and other work tools tend to evolve faster and faster.

In short, we live in an attention economy where we are constantly bombarded by various stimuli, with the training offer being just one stimulus among many. Ultimately, when you think about it, it matters little whether employees' attention spans are affected by intrinsic or environmental factors; it must be considered a rare and precious resource and managed accordingly.

So, what are the best ways to effectively manage attention during online training?

1. Improve motivation to take the training

The most effective strategies in this regard are well known: guiding employees toward the most relevant resources, linking training to performance metrics, recognizing completion (certifications, badges, etc.), using gamification mechanisms, and ensuring that new content and skills will be put to use quickly.

2. Adopt an optimal instructional design

Offering challenges to the learner, varying activities closely aligned with learning objectives, and producing appealing and effective multimedia elements tailored to the user experience are all measures that will increase buy-in and retention.

3. Take into account the work environment and target audience characteristics

Carefully consider the time that can be dedicated to training without interruption, the best devices available to learners, the most appropriate media, and the availability of dedicated training spaces. Learning and organizational platforms must also be taken into consideration regarding this aspect.

4. Offer social support

This approach is particularly useful in organizational environments with an established culture of sharing and collaboration. Mechanisms for sharing and collaboration between peers and experts, expertise sharing, and managerial support are crucial to this aspect.

5. Schedule the training

Simply communicating a deadline to the employee or ensuring that a specific time is dedicated to training has a tangible impact on motivation.

As we can see, attention management is becoming an increasingly decisive issue that benefits from being addressed organizationally and systemically to maximize the impact of training initiatives and budgets. From this perspective, a combination that takes into account the delivery strategy, the quality of the training experiences deployed, and the platforms offered will be the most effective.
