Universal accessibility for digital content especially online training is a highly relevant and increasingly important issue today.<\/p>\n

If your organization is committed to making training accessible to everyone, you're probably wondering how to apply the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to online learning. You may have even tried to work your way through the extensive Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 documentation. Given its highly technical and at times rather dry language, it's understandable if you came away with more questions than answers.<\/p>\n

We have had the opportunity to work on several e-learning projects that required adaptation to meet the principles of universal accessibility. Based on that experience, we'd like to take a moment to offer a simplified overview of this topic one that may have seemed complex or even intimidating at first.<\/p>\n

What Is Universal Accessibility?<\/h3>\n

Universal accessibility aims to make all online content including training courses and other digital resources accessible to everyone. This means adapting how content is presented so that people with disabilities, particularly those with visual or hearing impairments, can access it effectively. Ultimately, the goal is to provide an equivalent user experience for all learners.<\/p>\n

Just as disabilities vary in type and severity, so do the accessibility needs associated with them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In many cases, providing multiple accessibility options helps meet a range of needs or accommodate individuals with more than one disability. However, a solution designed for one type of disability can sometimes reduce accessibility for users with different needs.\nHaving collaborated with a variety of accessibility experts on projects designed to meet universal accessibility standards, we've come to realize that the term \"universal accessibility\" can be somewhat misleading.<\/p>\n

From this perspective, it would be more accurate to speak of enhanced accessibility or adaptive accessibility.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Standards<\/h3>\n

To help developers achieve recognized accessibility standards, several guidelines have been established, including WCAG 2.1 for web content and ISO 14289 for PDF documents.<\/p>\n

Rather than reproducing the complete list of accessibility guidelines which you can find here<\/a> here are the key principles to consider when making an online learning module accessible to everyone:<\/p>\n

Contrast:<\/strong> Text must have a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1.<\/strong> For large text, the guidelines allow the contrast ratio to be reduced to 3:1.<\/p>\n

Font:<\/strong> Text is generally considered large at 18 pt, or 14 pt when bold.<\/strong> However, because every typeface has its own characteristics, such as stroke width and style, this guideline is somewhat subjective. When in doubt, avoid overly decorative fonts and choose a larger font size to improve readability throughout your project.<\/p>\n

Media:<\/strong> Using multimedia presents unique accessibility challenges. A simple way to understand this principle is that all training content should be presented through more than one sensory channel.<\/strong> Several approaches can help achieve this easily:<\/p>\n
